Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
(this same process is adapted for children)
1. PRECATECHUMENATE
Time Period: as long as needed
What happens: Learning about God and the basics of the Catholic faith.
They will have experienced the first beginnings of conversion before taking
the first step.
FIRST STEP: Acceptance as a catechumen
2. CATECHUMENATE
Time period: up to 1 to 2 years or longer
What happens: Catechumens grow in their relationship with God and their
understanding of their faith. They become familiar with Catholic prayers
and practices as well as with the Mass. They participate in celebration
of the Liturgy of the Word at Mass, followed by Dismissal plus catechetical
sessions. In January, we consider whether or not catechumens are ready
for the next step or need more time in the catechumenate.
SECOND STEP: Election
3. PURIFICATION AND ENLIGHTENMENT
Time period: 40 days of Lent
What happens: Catechumens prepare to receive the sacraments of initiation—Baptism,
Confirmation, and First Communion. This is an intensive time of personal
preparation. There are also special rites particularly for them such as
penitential rites that involve prayers and blessings for them at Mass.
This time of preparation culminates with the Third Step.
THIRD STEP: Celebration of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion
4.
MYSTAGOGY
Time period: 50 days of Easter
What happens: Neophytes (or the newly baptized) are now able to fully
explore what it means to be able to receive communion and fully participate
in
the sacraments of the Catholic Church. They also prepare for their first
experience of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. |
