Saint Vincent de Paul SocietyThe St. Vincent de Paul Society is an international Catholic Organization of laypersons who seek through personal involvement and a spirit of love to charity and justice to help those who are in need or are suffering. The Society was founded by Frederic Osanam in Paris, France in 1833 and was named after Saint Vincent de Paul (1581-1660) a Catholic priest because of his outstanding example of charity. The Council of Orange County Society of St. Vincent de Paul, was incorporated on November 2nd, 1976. This specific and primary purpose of this organization is to carry on religious and charitable activities, to visit the poor, to assist the infirm and to improve their moral and social condition. To this end, the council supports 28 Parish-based conferences including one youth group. It also operates five stores, two warehouses and several special activities. Profits from the stores and all donations to these activities are used to pay for charitable programs that benefit those in need throughout Orange County. The conference is the basic unit; "the grassroots" of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. All members of a conference are volunteers and are called Vincentians. They strive toward increased spiritual growth through acts of charity. People in need me call the parents with their requests. The Vincentians make home visits, provide assistance to families, help the homeless with a meal, a bus ticket or a gas voucher, send children to summer camp, provide food baskets to families and presents to children at Christmas. They may also visit convalescent homes and hospitals. For information
